Why I love College
- Meet New People
- The one big difference from college and home is the fact that you are always surrounded by people. My friends would always tell me it is like one 8 month sleep over. I never thought it was true, but now that I am experiencing it, I agree with that idea. I love the idea of meeting someone new and them teaching me something I did not know before or expose me to something different.
- Experience Different Cultures
- I grew up in the middle of nowhere so moving to a city, I am being exposed to different cultures that are different than those families I grew up with who were the same for the past 18 years. Also, being in the city, there are different ways of life that are different than a small town environment. I am exposed to people who typically do not leave their rooms, or those who never come back and other dynamics that intrigue me.
- Try Different Experiences
- Back home, I am used to the same routine and staying within my comfort zone. Now that I am in a new city and a big school, I am more willing to try new things like go out and watch sporting events or immerse myself in different organizations to meet people. I also find myself exploring the area, taking the public transportation, and going to museums; all things I would not do when I was at home.
- Explore New Fields
- In college there are different opportunities available to learn new things and expose ourselves to different fields of interest. I try and take different classes that are different than engineering to learn about topics that I like such as psychology and Spanish. Although I cannot make a career out of them, I still like learning new things.
- Great Education
- The University of Pittsburgh is a very reputable university and many students leave their undergraduate career with a job, opportunity for graduate school, or enough experience to be successful in the future. I find that is it necessary to get a great education because in the back of my mind, I know that the work I put in and the stress I endure has a purpose in the end.
- Pushed out of my Comfort Zone
- I grew up living in a bubble I never wanted to leave. I would fret over the times where I would be put into a new situation where I thought I would be uncomfortable with. Going to college, I knew it was something I needed to do for myself and it made the bubble I created popped so that I can learn new things and gain different experiences to cherish in the future.
Jobs I Would Like When I Grow Up
- A Business Liaison between Engineers and their contractors
- A Researching trying to develop a more efficient product
- A High School Teacher after having an application experience
- Work with military contractors to develop better means of weaponry
- Work with neuroscientists to develop a way to help those with problems in their brain and cannot move parts of the body or their memories due to the strength of their neural impulses
- Work in collaboration with businesses to provide consulting on projects
Things I Learned About College
- What College is like:
- Before coming to college I thought I would be working all the time and constantly be focused on classes.
- During college I realized that I work a lot more than I would like and I spend most of my dat studying.
- What College is Not Like:
- Before I thought there would be a lot of people who made parties a big deal and there would be a lot of social pressures.
- During college I realized there are both types of groups and the social pressure is not as large as I believed.
- Discovery
- I learned that overall college is completely different that High School where in High School everyone makes everything their business and there is a lot of social pressures. In college everyone is an individual and no one really cares what you do and everyone is original.
